Sunsetting Minipy

Exactly one year ago, I launched Minipy – the Python code minifier and obfuscator. Today, I’m announcing I’m sunsetting it.

Why?

When I founded Railgun Labs, I made it a principle to build software that I myself use because I believe it yields a better product. If there’s a need for more functionality, I experience it firsthand. If there are pain points, I feel them. It’s not a marketing strategy. It’s a fundamental part of my process.

Minipy is something I built for Unicorn. When Unicorn launched, the source code for its Python scripts was not published. They were minified and obfuscated (except for commercial licensees).

Last month, I released Unicorn as Free Software under the GNU General Public License version 3, which includes the source code to the previously obfuscated Python scripts. With the source published, I no longer need a Python minifier and obfuscator.

When?

Minipy will be removed as a public offering from the Railgun Labs website early Q1 of 2026. Any clients who purchase a support contract for Minipy will receive support throughout the duration of their contract’s term. That includes any clients who purchase Minipy from now until it’s no longer publicly offered.

Conclusion

Minipy is something I’m proud of, however, building software I don’t use myself goes against my principles which is why I’m sunsetting it.
